Tanzania: Alternative Energy Is Needed to Save Our Forests

Interesting article by Deogratias Mushi in allAfrica.com about the energy used in Tanzania.

BIOMASS-based fuels, particularly fuel-wood (charcoal and firewood) are the main source of energy to both urban and rural areas.

According to Mr Bariki Kaale, who is an energy and environmental specialist, biomass -based fuel accounts for more than 90 per cent of primary energy supply in Tanzania.

He says that commercial energy sources i.e., petroleum and electricity, account for about 8 per cent and 1.2 per cent respectively of the primary energy used. Coal, solar and wind account for about 0.8 per cent of energy used.

Combustible renewables and waste (% of total energy)

Combustible renewables and waste (% of total energy)

Fascinating article on the World Bank showing the percentage of energy from biomass for each country.

In Sub-Saharan Africa more than half of total energy used comes from the burning of biomass and waste.

The highest percentage in Europe is Sweden with Finland a close second.

The United Kingdom and United States on the other hand are very far behind with only 3/4% using renewable and waste energy. Hopefully, we will see an increase on that figure in the not too distant future.
